For a lover of Irish Heirlooms these sweaters are knited by 42 women from both sides of Ireland’s cultural divide. Irish women coming together to hand knit for you. The name and origin of the hand knitter is provided for you on a tag and sewn into the sweater.

All sweaters are hand knit using genuine Donegal Yarns wools sourced from the Donegal Mill at Kilcar and have a genuine Donegal certificate of origin. On the Donegal Yarn tag the following is stated “South Donegal, an area noted for its isolated beauty is located between the Bluestack Mountains to the East and the wild Atlantic to the West. It was in this area a style of yarn recognized worldwide as a “Donegal” was born.  The inspiration for this unique yarn has been attributed to the local landscape: – a background of green valleys, brown hills, blue seas and grey skies with the speckled contrasts of the blue and purple of the heathers, the grey rocks and the white sheep on the hills.

Although in existence for centuries, this “Donegal” yarn exploded onto the international market just over a century ago. It gave its name to “Donegal” Tweed, the woven fabric famous for its high quality and the unique texture and colour characteristics of the yarn from which it is produced.

It is from this illustrious background that Donegal Yarns has evolved and emerged as the modern face of this craftmanship, not just in producing “Donegal” yarn for the weaving industry but also developing the traditional homespun yarn in the “Donegal” Tweed effect for the knitwear industry.
